About us

Nubia Wellness and Healing CIC was founded in 2024 by Dr Erica Mapule McInnis, a Consultant Clinical Psychologist of Jamaican parentage, after many years of practising from an African psychology framework. This included attending Association of Black Psychologists conferences in the USA and a Churchill Fellowship in 2016, where she deepened her knowledge.

On returning to the UK, she began practising explicitly using African psychology and launched her first Emotional Emancipation Circle for community healing. Nubia Healing CIC is our latest development, continuing this work.

We specialise in supporting communities of African ancestry and those who work with them, using the best of African psychology. Our position is African psychology for all, as we all can benefit. You are in safe hands as both organisations are led by a trained Consultant Clinical Psychologist with a strong track record of delivery and awards for innovation.

We are guided by traditional African ethical principles such as Ma’at, Ubuntu, and the 10 Virtues of the Ancient Egyptian Mystery System. Our approach to culture draws on the work of Dr Edwin Nichols and Dr Shelly Harrell, who describes culture as patterns of being, believing, bonding, belonging, behaving, and becoming. We recognise that people belong to multiple co existing communities at once. This means our approach is culturally syntonic, moving in sync with where a person is.

We draw on traditional African thought, culture, and principles to support the optimisation of individuals and communities. We also work from a di unital perspective, meaning both and rather than either or. We not only decolonise psychology, but go further to re indigenise it. We see healing as movement toward the five characteristics of healthy African functioning.

We value contributing to the evidence base through teaching and publications, using contemporary formats to deliver our work, and ensuring accessibility through structured and recorded learning.

We are a UK leading provider of African psychology based wellness and healing with an international reach through our online school.

Not all healing is therapy, and not all therapy is healing.
